WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Federal Aviation Administration on Feb. 15 announced nearly $1 billion from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that will fund construction at 114 airports in 44 states and three U.S. territories.

Construction of new general aviation terminals, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant building features, traffic control towers, improved security screening, passenger areas, terminal access roads, improved access to nearby public transit systems and gate concourses are among the types of construction projects that this funding will support.

Increasing terminal security, capacity, accessibility and sustainability while addressing the aging-related needs of regional airports’ infrastructure are priorities connected with the granting.

This $970 million is in addition to nearly $2 billion for U.S. airport terminals that has been allocated over the past two years via IIJA.

Examples of grant recipients announced Feb. 15 are:

— Washington Dulles International Airport – $35 million to fund a portion of construction of a 14-gate, 400,000-square-foot terminal building including connections to the Aerotrain and Metrorail

— Salt Lake City International Airport – $20 million to fund a portion of the Concourse B terminal expansion that will include 16 gates

— $40 million to Chicago O’Hare International Airport to fund Terminal 3 improvements to include increasing the central passenger corridor width, a reconfigured TSA checkpoint, new hold room, a new ADA-compliant and family restroom plus updates to the baggage system

This latest round of IIJA dollars will help fund construction to improve or replace existing, aging towers at Duluth International Airport (Minn.), Martin State Airport (Middle River, Md.) and Valley International Airport (Harlingen, Texas).

Several of the grants are devoted to improve airport access in smaller communities: $10 million to Punta Gorda Airport (Fla.), $6.5 million to Presque Isle International Airport (Maine) and $700,000 to Standing Roack Airport (Fort Yates, N.D.).
