GORHAM, Maine – Houston-based Plus Power LLC is touting Gorham, Maine – some 11 miles west of Portland – as the newest of its 60 energy storage projects under construction across the U.S.

The 175-megawatt electric battery storage facility, known as Cross Town Energy Storage, is advancing the state of Maine’s long-term energy goal of replacing its natural gas-fired plants with electric battery power.

Expected to be operational by mid-2025, the plant will provide just-in-time power to grid operators as needed.

The facility’s layout resembles 156 tractor-trailer-like containers spread across five acres in Gorham Industrial Park. Each container will be filled with lithium iron phosphate batteries.

Construction began in April 2024.
