CYPRUS, Mediterranean – Jacobs is immersed in the design of a first-of-its-kind underwater, long-duration, large-scale energy storage pilot project off the coast of Cyprus.

The global engineering firm is developing a preliminary design for project owner BaroMar, an energy storage innovation company.

The 4 megawatt project leverages existing, mature technology in power, energy and maine engineering, combined with the hydrostatic pressure of seawater. The project goal is to achieve 70 percent round-trip efficiency while storing compressed air in large, rigid tanks that are ballasted on the seabed.
