FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. – E.T. Simonds Construction of Carbondale is embarking on the largest project in the company’s 77-year history.

The heavy highway contractor is spearheading construction of a $61 million effort to expand a 53-mile-long stretch of Interstate 57 to six lanes between I-24 and I-64 in Southern Illinois. The multi-year project’s goal is to relieve increased freight congestion on the route, which sees up to 40,000 vehicles daily.

Sierra Bravo Contractors, PJR & Associates, Kerber, Eck & Braeckel, Dunn Co., Asphalt Stone Co. and First Mid Insurance Group are additional project partners.

The anticipated project completion will occur in June 2025. Between 50 to 75 workers are onsite daily.
