JOPLIN, Mo. – The city of Joplin’s win of nearly $90 million in public grant dollars is spurring its plans to embark on road, airport and park improvements this year.
$48 million of this total hails from outside funding including American Rescue Plan Act money. ARPA was authorized in March 2021 as a response to economic impacts driven by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Joplin plans to dedicate $9 million toward road widenings, $5 million toward a new splash pad at Ewert Park and nine stormwater projects around town.
Nearly $10 million of the grant money will fund runway improvements at Joplin Regional Airport.
Joplin officials say the $90 million represents double the amount normally spent on capital improvement projects.
