Columbia, MO to Gain 22nd Elementary School

COLUMBIA, Mo. – With considerable residential growth on the city’s south side, Columbia Public Schools – the fifth-largest school district in Missouri – is preparing to begin construction of a brand-new elementary campus to be known as Southwest Elementary School.

Columbia, Mo.-based Simon Oswald Architecture is handling bid submittals for the $44 million project (approved by voters in 2022) which spans 126,853 square feet. The new school will accommodate 650 students.

The Southwest Elementary project timeline estimates completion in time for the Fall 2026 term.

Columbia Public Schools has 21 (Southwest Elementary, to be completed in Fall 2026, is number 22), seven middle schools and four high schools.

To continue addressing the influx of residents with young learners, the district is building a 13,000-square-foot addition of 11 new classrooms at Battle Elementary School and a classroom addition at Russell Boulevard Elementary School. The Battle Elementary project is aiming to wrap up by Fall 2025.
