PITTSBURGH, Penn. – General contractor Whiting-Turner is managing the $1.3 billion patient facility project for University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

The 900,000-square-foot Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin Tower will begin patient admissions in January 2027. It adds 636 private rooms to the UPMC network.

The massive 17-story, one million-square-foot vertical expansion project on the UPMC Presbyterian campus in Pittsburgh also features 11 specialized operating rooms and an underground parking structure.

The lead architect for the UPMC Kamin Tower is HGA (Hammel, Green and Abrahamson).

They designed the curving 17-story glass tower to feature energy-efficient patterned glass that harmonizes with the surrounding Oakland neighborhood skyline. To bring the exterior, landscape and interior visions to life, HGA collaborated with several prominent partners:

OLIN: The landscape architecture firm responsible for designing the tower’s extensive terraced gardens, urban plazas and integrated green spaces.

IKM Architecture: A Pittsburgh-based architecture firm that collaborated closely on the local design, compliance and planning approval phases.
