MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Baird Center expansion – a $456 million job – is now complete, just in time to host the 2024 Republic National Convention July 15-18.

It has been the largest construction project in the state.

Providence, R.I.-based Gilbane Building Company and Fond du Lac, Wis.-based C.D. Smith Construction broke ground on the project in late October 2021 and construction began in earnest during Spring 2022. The project wrapped in late April 2024 and a ribbon cutting was held in mid-May.

The expanded Baird Center now spans 1.3 million square feet, twice the size as before and will support 100,000 additional out-of-state visitors annually.

A total of 24 new meeting rooms, six loading docks, 400 indoor parking spaces and the roof-top Baird Ballroom and Baird Sky View Terrace are features of the build, which has applied for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification with the U.S. Green Building Council.

Owner Wisconsin Center District achieved diversity, equity and inclusion project goals of 25 percent minority-owned businesses, 5 percent women-owned businesses and 1 percent disabled veteran-owned businesses.
