1st Aluminum Rolling Facility Built in U.S. in 40 Years is Underway in Alabama

BAY MINETTE, Ala. – A $5 billion aluminum plant owned by Novelis – some 35 miles northeast of Mobile, Ala. – is on track to complete and begin operating by the end of 2026.

The facility is North America’s first new aluminum rolling mill in more than 40 years, aimed at bolstering supply for beverage packaging and automotive uses. It will produce 600,000 tons of finished goods annually.

As a key contractor on this project, Mobile-based G.A. West is performing structural steel erection, ductwork installation, cable tray installation and electrical/utility work.

Novelis is an American industrial aluminum smelting company, headquartered in Atlanta, Ga. It produces rolled aluminum and is an aluminum recycler, supplying to sectors including beverage cans, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, construction, foil and packaging.

The aluminum recycling and rolling plant, situated on 3,000 acres, will feature advanced, low-carbon methodologies. It will focus on closed-loop recycling, taking back aluminum from customers to produce new products, thereby reducing CO2 emissions.
