Ullico, Inc. Chairman and CEO Edward M. Smith has passed away.

A staunch advocate of the American labor movement and an industry visionary, Smith died on Jan. 3.

At the young age of 13, Smith followed in his father Connell Smith’s footsteps and joined the Laborers’ Local 773. By age 21, he became business manager, the same role his dad fulfilled 34 years.

Ed Smith was the first LiUNA (Laborers’ International Union of North America) member in the U.S. to graduate from the National Labor College.

Smith’s wife, Betty, survives, as do their sons Jordan and Matt.
