Is the Construction Industry Headed for a Slowdown?

By MASON CUMMINGS

Is the constructon industry headed for a slowdown?

A recent report indicates a “pause” or “slowdown” in the construction landscape – especially for mid-sized projects – due to economic uncertainty, tariffs and labor shortages.

However, don’t hit the brakes just yet.

Industry leaders remain optimistic, predicting that the market will “normalize” by late this year.

Here’s what you need to know:

The Biggest Challenge

Rising material costs and potential project delays are a direct result of tariffs and supply chain issues. This is making owners hesitant to commit to new projects.

A Tale of Two Markets

Bigger projects – like the $4 billion DFW Airport improvement plan – are moving forward because they can better absorb the increased costs. Smaller projects, however, are struggling to get off the ground.

The silver lining? The U.S. has softened some initial tariff policies, and there’s optimism that a lot of the tariff issues will be resolved by the end of Q3 or early Q4.
