A Sub That’s a Partner Wants to Be Brought in as Early as Possible
By CHARLES ROBINSON
Had a great follow-up call recently with a new contractor on an upcoming project they’ve been awarded.
They’re excited to work with us, but hesitated to bring us on “too early.”
My response was simple: bring us in as early as possible.
Early engagement puts you in our queue, gives us time to plan properly and allows real coordination with the other trades. Waiting until you think you’re ready often means competing with backlogs and compressed timelines – leaving less room to address the inevitable challenges that come with construction.
They said something that really stood out:
“I’ve never had a low-voltage company want to be contracted this early.”
My reply: that’s the difference between a subcontractor and a partner.
When you treat your trades as partners, everyone wins:
✅ The owner is happier because surprises and major cost changes are minimized
✅ The GC team is less stressed, confident the scope is covered and not scrambling against deadlines
✅ Our team performs better because we have the time to plan, coordinate and execute the right way
That’s how projects run smoother. That’s how trust is built. And that’s how partnerships create better outcomes for everyone involved.
Win. Win. Win.
