WINNIPEG, MANITOBA – City officials in Winnipeg have begun construction on the $127 million South Winnipeg Recreation Campus, a major multi-use facility designed to meet the needs of one of the city’s fastest-growing areas.
Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Manitoba.
The first phase of the project includes three full-size gymnasiums, multipurpose rooms, an indoor walking track, a 5,200-square-foot fitness area (with cardio and weight equipment), café, child care center and an outdoor spray pad. Phase 2 should begin design work this spring as well for a new aquatic center, which will include a lap pool, leisure pool, lazy river, water slides, hot tub, steam room and more.
The new facility is part of the city’s 2021 Winnipeg Recreation Strategy to “ensure that our city’s recreation facilities and programs continue to support the health and well-being of our residents and communities,” the city wrote.
Funding for the first phase of the project, which should open in early 2028, came from the Province of Manitoba and the Government of Canada. PCL Constructors Canada Inc., headquartered in Alberta, was chosen as the general contractor for the first phase.
