Kansas DOT Building Largest Program in Agency’s History
By NOLAN POINTER
SEDGWICK & BUTLER COUNTIES, Kan. – The Kansas Dept. of Transportation is delivering its largest program – in terms of dollar amount – in the agency’s history.
The $287.97 project, which begins construction this season, encompasses a complete reconstruction and expansion of two miles along U.S. 54 from four lanes to six.
As far as scope is concerned, the works also includes a total of 26 bridge replacements, including the U.S. 54 interchanges at K-96, 143rd and 159th Streets. A total of 32 new retaining walls and several two-lane frontage roads will be built to help support local business access, according to Kansas DOT.
The huge project was awarded to Dondlinger Wildcat EKC1, a joint venture between Wichita-based general contractors Dondlinger & Sons Construction and Wildcat Construction.
The Dodlinger Wildcat EKC1 JV will also reconstruct approximately one mile of K-96 north of U.S. 54.
This effort is part of Kansas DOT’s Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, a 10-year, $10 billion program to update Kansas’ transportation system.
