5 Questions That Set Construction Projects Up for Success
By RYAN HIGGINS
Most construction projects don’t fail because people aren’t working hard. They fail because the right questions weren’t asked early.
Clear answers upfront save time, money and frustration later. Before we start any project, these are the five questions we always ask.
- What is the total project budget?
Without a clear budget, teams are guessing. That usually leads to redesigns, value engineering under pressure or missed expectations. Knowing the budget upfront helps everyone make smarter decisions from day one.
- What are the target start and completion dates?
Schedules drive labor, materials and sequencing. If dates aren’t realistic or clearly defined, problems show up fast. Clear timelines help teams plan properly instead of scrambling later.
- Have all subcontractors been selected?
If subs are in place, coordination can start early. If not, there’s more uncertainty around pricing and schedule. Either way, knowing this upfront helps avoid surprises mid-project.
- What are the biggest risks right now?
Every project has risk. The good ones talk about it early. Materials, permits, labor or site conditions can all cause delays if they aren’t addressed upfront.
- Who makes decisions and how fast do approvals happen?
Unclear decision paths slow projects down. Clear authority and realistic approval timelines keep work moving and prevent small issues from turning into big delays.
Why this matters
These questions create clarity. And clarity is what keeps projects moving.
Strong projects start with strong conversations. Asking the right questions early sets the tone for everything that follows.
After 20 years in the construction industry, I have learned that asking these clarifying questions upfront ensures every project ends in success.
